{Primative Laundry Room} Makeover

We were hired by a client to remodel her laundry room. Chris and I don’t do a ton of client DIYs so “we” figured it would be a fun winter project for us (well maybe more fun for me then Chris – but he is such a trooper and the BEST handy man I know!)

Here are some before shots of the space – it was a pretty basic run of the mill laundry room… wire shelving, vinyl flooring, and white walls.

| The Design |

After our design consult, I went to work designing. We went through a couple revisions during this process – originally the client wanted brick (veneer) tile on the washer/dryer wall and maybe some shiplap on the opposite wall … but ended up loving the shiplap so we used that as the feature wall. We then went through a few flooring ideas and cabinet/shelf layouts before finally landing on the final draft.

| Behind the Scenes Work |

Once we got the final drawing approved, it was time to turn my house into a workshop! It was too cold to spray the cabinets in the garage – so I turned our downstairs into a scene from Dexter! 😛 Haha! The client wanted black cabinets, so we sprayed them Sherwin Williams Tricon Black

And this is the state of my house for the next few weeks prepping! May seem chaotic – but I love it!!

After a little shopping around, we decided on doing LVP for flooring. Chris and I had never installed this before – so we recommended hiring someone who had experience. It turned out great – so much so that I think one day a little DIY LVP install at our own house might be happening 😉

We went with Lowe’s in stock SMARTCORE Shady Pine Luxury Vinyl Plank Flooring – which had a warm weathered look to it and a touch of black to really compliment the cabinets.

| The Execution|

Then came time for the install! We were only able to work over the weekends – so it was a process. First up was installing the cabinets. We had to custom build the sink cabinet to fit the beautiful farmhouse sink and also retrofit the cabinets to allow for the dryer vent. During the process the client wanted to add in a few spacers so there wasn’t as big of a gap between the washer and dryer – since it was a last minute add, we had to build a few custom pieces so the spacers weren’t free floating!

Once the cabinets were installed, it was time to cut the countertops! The client went with my original pitch of doing butchers block and at the Design Stage I was super excited for it! Then when it came time to execute…. it was semi-stressful to think we were cutting a $250+ piece of wood and we had ONE go at it – so it had to be perfect! (haha, slight panic moment!! what was I thinking?!) But Chris is nothing if not a researcher… so I had full confidence he’d find the best way to do it! And he totally rocked it – it turned out perfect! (I tell him all the time he should thank me for expanding his skill set! haha!!)

Once the countertops were in, we installed the custom built floating shelf, painted the walls SW Natural Linen, and stained the counter and shelf Minwax’s Provincial.

Then it was time for my favorite day: Shiplap install day!!! I had already pre-primed and painted the shiplap (which I highly recommend doing beforehand if you know what color/stain you are doing!! It makes life so much easier!). For the shiplap we went with the tried-and-true SW Alabaster (my favorite color for shiplap if you want a creamy-white!)

Once shiplap was done, it was time to re-do all the window trim and baseboard. We went with a farmhouse detail on the window and did a standard craftsman trim for the baseboard. The client wanted a barn door, so we tore out the old door frame, and built a new framed opening. Then we installed a barn door, painted the same color as the cabinets.

Once all the sanding, priming and painting was done on the trim work, we installed the faucet and hanging rod.

Unfortunately, the sink we ordered requires a special drain – we assumed it would be a in-stock pick up… but it turned into a custom order. So we are waiting for that to come in… and it should be a quick install once it does!

Also the client held off on having us install the fun new light fixture because she wanted to have the electrical moved to the center of the room (which their electrician friend offered to do for them at a later date!)
